This study aims to identify the types of non-observance maxims, how the non-observance maxim occurs, and the types of conversational implicatures in the dialogues of the main character in the Upgraded movie, which is set in a workplace context. The analysis of conversational implicature is based on Grice's theory, while the classification of non-observance maxim refers to Thomas’s theory. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with the data collected by watching the movie and transcribing utterances containing conversational implicatures. The validity of the data was strengthened through triangulation. The findings reveal that conversational implicatures emerge through various forms of maxim non-observance, including 13 instances of flouting the maxim of quality, 2 maxim of quantity, 4 maxim of relevance, 2 maxim of manner, and 5 instances of violating the maxim of quality. In addition, the study identified 19 particularized conversational implicatures and 7 generalized conversational implicatures. These findings indicate that maxim non-observance is not merely a form of deviation but also a communication strategy that helps construct conversational implicatures, thereby providing new insights into workplace communication patterns.
2025-12-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Suryany Tanjung Abady, Yulius Kurniawan, Endar Rachmawaty Linuwihhttps://ijl.upnjatim.ac.id/index.php/ijl/article/view/57PERANG WACANA: PEMBINGKAIAN HAMAS DAN ISRAEL OLEH MEDIA I24 NEWS ARABIA2025-10-19T11:59:02+00:00Rahmat Rahmatrahmathidayat1999@mail.ugm.ac.idNi Gusti Ayu Roselani roselani@ugm.ac.id
This phenomenon is interesting to study through the lyrics of the song ‘Ibu’ by Pangalo!, which depicts a critical reflection on gender construction and power relations in popular culture. This research aims to explore how domestic violence is represented in the lyrics of the song ‘Ibu’ by Pangalo! through Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis. The method used was qualitative with a linguistic approach (critical discourse analysis) based on Sara Mills’ model. Findings show that the lyrics of the song ‘Ibu’ strongly reflect patriarchal ideology, depicting mothers as passive victims who endure physical and emotional violence while justifying their suffering due to cultural and religious dogma. However, Pangalo! also shows resistance in his lyrics, challenging the normalization of domestic violence and fighting for gender equality. This study demonstrates that popular music can serve as a medium of social critique by exposing the normalization of gender-based violence. The results contribute to gender and communication studies by showing how song lyrics shape empathy toward victims and raise awareness of equality, making this research relevant for future cultural discourse analysis.
2025-12-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Mario Sebastian Adiputra, Jihad Al-Fisa Bilillahhttps://ijl.upnjatim.ac.id/index.php/ijl/article/view/58REVISITING MULTIMODAL DISCOURSE: A REVIEW OF INTRODUCING MULTIMODALITY (2ND EDITION, 2025)2025-10-19T12:02:52+00:00Tran Hong Lamlamth.1985@gmail.com
This review examines the second edition of "Introducing Multimodality" (2025) by Jewitt, Bezemer, and O'Halloran. The book updates and refines several theoretical frameworks including Systemic Functional Linguistics, Social Semiotics, and Conversation Analysis. It also incorporates digital case studies and tools for conducting multimodal analysis. The review highlights the strengths of the book in terms of theoretical clarity and its usefulness for classroom teaching. At the same time, it points out some ongoing limitations, such as a lack of cultural inclusiveness and difficulties for beginner readers. Despite improvements in visual aids and methodological explanations, the book still mainly uses Western examples and academic terminology that may be difficult to access. Overall, this edition makes an important contribution to the study of multimodal discourse, especially for graduate-level instruction and research training.

2025-12-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Tran Hong Lam
